Ninja V h.265 firmware upgrade available

June 4, 2021

Ninja V just got more powerful. Upgrade your Atomos Ninja V firmware now to benefit from h.265 encoding.

This is a paid upgrade available directly from Atomos for $99.

After upgrading your Atomos Ninja V will be capable of recording in ProRes, DNxHD, and h.265. New high-efficiency video coding (HEVC/h.265) promises to offer UHD files at 75% of the usual size when compared to h.264. It’d been specifically developed for use in high resolution HDR workflows with wide colour gamuts and could even pave the way for efficient 8K workflows.

And what’s more, with an optional baked in LUT you can say goodbye to flat LOG images right out of the box.

While the decrease in size comes at the expense of an increase in required computing power the trade-off for extra storage is a no brainer. And the compression used by h.265 is significantly more effective than that of h.264, with the ability to reproduce finer details - preserving details in gradients and areas with high and varying luminance (such as clouds).

An added bonus is that h.265 is perfect for scenarios where a post production pipeline doesn’t include colour grading or other manipulation, often the case on low budget productions or when you need to provide footage to the client as fast as possible.

There’s little doubt that h.265 will shape the face of the film industry for many years to come.
