It was great to be back at BSC!

Blog
March 7, 2023

At this year's BSC Expo, we showcased the latest offerings from industry leaders LaCie, Seagate, and Symply. And based on the buzz on the show floor, we're not the only ones who think they're top of the line.

It was exciting to see attendees pointing at our products and saying "oh, I'm using that!" or "this is what we have in the studio." And it's not just a passing trend - some people are even starting to associate their storage solutions with our brands exclusively. Need LTO? Think Symply. External hard drive or SSD? LaCie's got you covered.

We're proud to be at the forefront of this growing demand for reliable and robust storage solutions. And through our responsive and customer-focused support and innovative technology, we're confident that we can keep this trend going strong. So, if you want to stay ahead of the game when it comes to storage and archive, speak to our team to see what we can offer to suit your requirements and improve your workflow.

Large volume, affordable data management with Seagate Exos JBOD

During content creation for film and TV, data volumes are exponentially growing and the necessity for productions to safely store, protect and make available assets to various departments is critical.  Seagate’s innovatively engineered Exos Expansion JBOD systems offer users a highly affordable and performant ‘bit bucket’ that can be quickly deployed for productions to store vast amount of project data – up to 1.68PB in a single 5U chassis in the case of the Exos E 5U84 model we had at BSC! Offering a low cost per TB in an easily serviceable system, Seagate Exos JBODs can add store huge amounts of production content through a user’s own choice of server.

Multi-functional desktop storage by LaCie

The LaCie 1big Dock and 2big Dock are tailor-made for creative professionals who aim to streamline their workflows and optimise their workspaces. These desktop storage solutions attract creators' attention due to their ability to not only store and backup source footage and data, but provide ingest from built-in CFexpress (Type-B), CFast 2.0 and SDXC readers. Through the featured USB hub, users can also charge phones or other peripherals as well as connect third-party media readers or portable drives while benefiting from the ability to connect 4K monitors via the included Display Port as well.  All through a single Thunderbolt 3 connection to a host computer, which for laptops also provides Power Delivery.

Ultra-fast NVMe SSD solutions by LaCie

The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro is renowned for its impressive speed and toughness. It boasts a Seagate FireCuda NVMe SSD with a Thunderbolt 3 interface, enabling both read and write performance up to 2,800 MB/s. With a form-factor that fits in the palm of your hand, an IP67 rating and 2-ton crush resistance and 3m drop-protection, the Rugged SSD Pro redefines the standard for fast, portable Rugged drives.  And should the worst happen, like all LaCie drives, Seagate’s Rescue Data Recovery services are included as standard for the duration of the 5-year warranty. So, when you don’t have a backup LaCie have got your back.

Symply’s latest disk, tape and cloud solutions

Symply displayed their range of Disk, Tape, and Cloud solutions, each offering a unique set of benefits for users. However, today we want to home in on one of the latest product releases: SymplyTRANSPORTER. TRANSPORTER is an S3 cloud-native, portable and rugged edge appliance, designed by Symply and powered by Datacore Perifery software. Offering 100TB of erasure code protected object storage SymplyTRANSPORTER provides data protection beyond the capabilities of traditional RAID, and with 256-bit encryption and an S3 interface the solutions is attack-hardened making it impossible for third parties to gain unauthorised access to stored content. TRANSPORTER is also impervious to attacks from both malware and ransomware.

Furthermore, the Kubernetes architecture of the appliance allows it to host additional applications such as data movers or MAMs enabling users to process ingested content locally – providing the potential to dramatically speed up workflows. Connectivity is provided via standard high-bandwidth 25Gb/10Gb Ethernet and the Se native interface means that content and/or metadata stored on TRANSPORTER can be synchronised to any public cloud provider or used in a private cloud environment.

Currently, high-capacity Thunderbolt or USB-attached RAIDs are typically used to secure and transport content. The typical RAID 5 data protection used can have rebuild times running into weeks, putting valuable content at risk.  These RAID devices generally do not support encryption or have the ability to restrict access to the device, and can easily be infected with malware and ransomware. By combining object storage and erasure code technologies along with a simple 'Plug and Play' workflow, SymplyTRANSPORTER provides a truly secure content shuttle able to meet the rigorous security demands of big productions.
