Atomos Ninja

Now with HD-SDI playout and external power options included for just €1,145 / £995...

Atomos, the creator of the NAB award-winning Ninja, is delighted to announce that the highly anticipated HD-SDI Samurai 10-bit Apple ProRes Field Recorder, Monitor and Playback/Playout device will begin shipping in September, during the IBC show in Amsterdam.

Not only Playback, but Playout.

Samurai is already the most complete and affordable HD SDI ProRes Field Recorder, boasting;

  • High resolution 5” (800x480) touchscreen/monitor.
  • Atomos’ unique Continuous Power battery management system.
  • Recording to low-cost HDDs and SSDs.
  • Silent, fanless operation.
  • Tough, aircraft-grade aluminium construction.
Samurai will now ship with Playout of full-resolution HD-SDI (1920 x 1080) decoded from the Samurai’s recorded media.

Samurai can be used as an HD-SDI, single-channel playout device for instant review or broadcast, or in any situation that requires an extremely high quality full-HD source - with up to 20 hours of HD playout from a single disk. Producers, directors and camera operators can check quality and composition on-set or on the way home, using the Samurai’s built-in high resolution 800x480 SMPTE colour-spec screen, for portability, or at full quality on any HD/SD SD-SDI monitor. Playback controls emulate a traditional tape transport, with extra flexibility afforded by the touchscreen.

  • Touchscreen scrub navigation: instant seek to any point - even on a 20-hour clip.
  • Shuttle controls (stop, step, play, fast fwd, fast fast fwd, fast rwd, fast fast rwd).
  • Frame-by-frame advance and reverse.

With this new playout capability, the Samurai becomes the lowest cost, truly portable recorder that plays out Full HD from Apple ProRes files for uncompressed quality on any size of monitor.

The Samurai can also accept power via a D-Tap from larger external batteries (7-20V), giving professionals the choice of using the Samurai’s unique “Continuous Power” battery management system, or seemless integration with their current camera rig’s power supply.

Atomos CEO Jeromy Young says “We’ve actually delayed the release of the Samurai to include HD SDI playout. It was a much-requested feature and we felt it was worth the extra effort and development time to include this for the Samurai’s release. The addition of external power options and playout for only $100 more makes this a compelling choice.

Samurai is a deck in the palm of your hand. Record, playback and playout makes this the complete utility on any type of shoot, including news, broadcast, in fact any production big oir small. Samurai is truly the ultimate 10-bit production weapon.

We will begin shipping Samurai in early September, and I’m happy to say that we already have a very large number of advance orders for this ground-breaking product.”
